TONY STEYGER
Filmmaker / Producer / Media Innovator

For more than forty years I've explored one simple question:
How can new media help people tell their own stories?
From pioneering community video in the early 1980s to today's possibilities with artificial intelligence, my work has always been about shifting authorship from institutions to individuals.
I began with Whose Disability? (1982) using video to empower adults with complex disabilities to communicate through film. That philosophy went on to shape projects including the first Paralymics programming for Channel 4, the Emmy Award-winning BBC Video Diaries, the creation of Video Nation and the BBC's first New Media department, all generating programmes that changed who got to tell stories on British television.
Since then I've worked across broadcasting, digital media, education and production, including senior roles at the BBC, Maverick Television and Southampton Solent University, while producing award-winning documentaries and more recently films for BBC's The One Show.
Whether I'm developing a television format, making a documentary or collaborating with communities, the goal remains the same:
To use media not simply to tell stories, but to help people tell their own.
